Salt wall system

This modular salt wall construction kit is designed as a hanging system for the simple, quick and clean construction of a salt wall. The salt bricks are made from pure, translucent rock salt. They are simply hung in a grid on the wall.

Light, warmth and salt

Light, warmth and salt are important components of life; they promote harmony, joy and well-being. Warm light gently penetrates the white salt crystal and, similar to moonlight, creates a silvery-white salt light with a delicate hint of blush that radiates a noble and elegant cosiness. The heat radiates through the salt wall and the salt stones absorb it over time and release it into the room as natural radiant heat, even when the light has already been switched off. Each stone in our salt wall is a piece of nature and unique in its structure and colour. The crystalline secrets that have been enclosed in it since time immemorial are now revealed by the even and warm backlighting with the SALUX® lighting system. The white salt stones in their various shades of colour are united in our salt wall system to form a total work of art and - together with the backlighting - create a shimmering white salt surface with a reddish touch that shines in silver salt light.

White salt

The colour ranges from a very light shade of grey to white to a hint of orange in white salt. White salt consists of many small clear salt crystals nested inside each other, which together appear white due to the refraction of light, similar to snow, where the snow crystals consisting of many transparent, tiny ice crystals also appear white.

Origin: The white salt comes from the Salt Range in Pakistan.

Dimensions

The salt wall system is available in various sizes. The module width is 50 cm. Therefore, the width can be selected in 50 cm increments. The height can be selected in 20 cm increments, starting from 40 cm. Each salt wall consists of two different salt bricks: the main brick (20x10x5 centimetres) and the edge brick, which is only half the size (10x10x5 centimetres). As its name suggests, the edge brick is only used at the edge. If you want to extend your salt wall to the side, the kerbstones are replaced by main stones and the kerbstones are moved to the newly created edge. The joint between the stones is approximately 2.4 millimetres wide. This results in slightly larger overall dimensions in width and height. The bricks are hung in a bond, as with real brickwork. The four edges of the visible side of each brick are bevelled with a five millimetre wide 45-degree chamfer.

Backlighting

At the heart of the backlighting is the SALUX® warm-light tube, a light tube fitted with miniature bulbs, whose light bathes the salt wall evenly in a harmonious hue and whose pleasant warmth is immediately noticeable, as rock salt transmits the vast majority of thermal radiation – 92 per cent, to be precise. Over time, the salt bricks and the salt wall also warm up. Even when the light has been switched off, this warmth continues to radiate for quite some time. It is this combination of light and warmth that creates this unique and cosy atmosphere of well-being.

Replaceable backlight
The SALUX® warm light tube can be replaced if necessary and – here’s the amazing part – without having to remove all the salt bricks and the support grid. You simply need to remove one brick to access the electrical connection via the junction box underneath. The light strip can then be easily pulled out from the side of the salt wall. In the same way, you slide a new light strip piece by piece sideways behind the salt bricks into the corresponding light strip channels and then connect it accordingly. This new backlighting is highly recommended, particularly for salt walls that are in use for long periods. There is no need to store the salt bricks separately, remove the retaining grids or loosen the fixings – a huge advantage over the previous backlighting system. However, this does require approximately 15 cm of space to the right and left of the salt wall.

Back plate

The back plate also serves as a drilling template, making it easy to assemble the salt wall. The back plate features light channels into which the rope light is inserted and a through-hole for the power connection. The salt wall requires a 230-volt power connection. Assembly

For each salt wall module, four to six brackets are screwed to the wall, to which a support grid is attached. There are two angled holes in each of the salt bricks into which grub screws are screwed, which are then used to hang the bricks into the grid. All metal parts are made of rust- and acid-free stainless steel. Translucent foam strips made of oekotex-certified foam are clamped between the bricks to fill the joints. This looks beautiful, especially when the salt wall is backlit, as there are no distracting shadows. The joints now glow together with the salt stones in a warm shade of light. In addition, unpleasant flashes of light, which occur when looking directly through a joint into a light source, are avoided.
The salt wall kit is designed as a hanging system and can therefore be placed freely on the wall like a picture; there is no need for a plinth or to raise the salt stones from the floor. As no adhesive is required, there are also no emissions.
The salt wall can be easily dismantled and reassembled at another location. However, the threaded pins should then be left in the salt bricks so that the salt does not break out due to repeated screwing in and out.

Note

Rock salt dissolves at a relative humidity of 75 per cent or more. Rooms with higher humidity are therefore unsuitable for a salt wall, unless the humidity is lowered accordingly with a dehumidifier.

For salt wall lighting with RGB colours (RGB = red, green, blue) or colour-changing effects, we recommend our unlit salt wall kits containing white salt. For example, our standard white salt kit. We would be happy to recommend suitable lighting for this on request.

Please note: A red salt wall is not particularly well suited to RGB colour-changing effects using LEDs, as the red salt distorts the light colours unattractively.

Yes, our salt panels are generally also suitable for installation on plasterboard or drywall. Thanks to their shallow depth of just 9 cm and a low load-bearing depth of approx. 4.5 cm, they exert virtually no leverage on the wall.

A module measuring 50 × 100 cm weighs around 60 kg and is secured with six screws – this equates to a load of around 10 kg per screw.

It is important to take the total weight of the entire salt wall into account during the planning stage. For larger salt walls, we recommend aligning the vertical substructure so that it directly accommodates the salt wall’s fixing points. We will be happy to provide you with the required dimensions in advance.

For installation on plasterboard walls, suitable universal wall plugs or special plasterboard wall plugs should be used. The expansion plugs supplied are intended for solid brick and concrete walls.
